History

The Arizona Rancho stands on the high plateau country east of Holbrook, in the Little Colorado River drainage of Navajo and Apache counties. The property is a Pueblo Revival ranch complex built in the early twentieth century, when stock operations in the region were rebuilding after the difficult drought and cattle-glut years of the 1890s. Its plan and elevation draw on the older Hispanic ranch traditions of the upper Rio Grande, transplanted by builders and owners who admired the low, flat-roofed, vigas-and-canales massing of New Mexico's Spanish ranchos.

Construction is the regionally common hybrid found across northeastern Arizona: stuccoed exterior walls over earthen or masonry cores, projecting wooden roof beams, deep recessed porches, and small punched windows trimmed in painted wood. The compound is organized around a central courtyard, with subordinate outbuildings — bunkhouse, sheds, corrals — arranged in the loose order typical of working ranches rather than the formal plan of a residence-only estate. Surface finishes were renewed periodically in the dry plateau climate, and the property retains the patched, hand-worked character that distinguishes a continuously occupied ranch from a restored museum house.

The Arizona Rancho is associated in regional documentation with the working Hispanic and Anglo-Hispanic stock culture of the Concho and Holbrook area, including the chile-drying, sheep-grazing, and small-scale farming that the Library of Congress recorded photographically in the surrounding villages during the mid-twentieth century. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under reference number 97001210 in recognition of its architectural integrity and its place in that ranching landscape.

It remains a private residence and working property and is not open to the public. Within Arizona's adobe inheritance the Arizona Rancho stands as a representative example of how the upper-plateau ranching country absorbed Pueblo Revival forms during the early twentieth century, marrying functional ranch planning to the older earthen architectural language of the Southwest.
