The Jose Joaquin Castro Adobe stands at 184 Old Adobe Road northwest of Watsonville, on land that formed part of Rancho San Andres, the Mexican grant confirmed to the Castro family in the 1830s. Jose Joaquin Castro was a member of one of the prominent Californio families of the Monterey Bay region, and his rancho occupied the rolling hills above the Pajaro Valley. The two-story adobe house on the property was built during the late Mexican period, in the 1840s, and served as the principal Castro residence in the years immediately preceding American annexation.

The building is a substantial two-story adobe of the Monterey Colonial type that spread through central California from its hearth in Monterey in the late 1830s and 1840s. Thick adobe walls on a stone footing rise two stories, with a cantilevered wood balcony running the length of the principal facade, sheltered by the overhanging eaves of a low-pitched wood-shingled roof. Lime-plastered surfaces protect the earthen walls, and a fandango room on the upper floor reflects the social use of the house in the rancho period. The interior plan is organized around a central staircase, an arrangement that distinguishes the Monterey Colonial type from the linear rancho house.

The Castro Adobe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 under reference 76000531 in recognition of its architectural and historical significance. It is now under the stewardship of California State Parks, which has undertaken seismic stabilization and conservation work, and the building is generally accessible on a limited schedule.

Within California's adobe tradition, the Castro Adobe is one of the most important surviving Monterey Colonial residences outside Monterey itself, comparable to the Larkin House and the Cooper-Molera Adobe in defining the regional two-story type. It documents the upper tier of Californio domestic life in the closing years of Mexican rule.
