History
Doan's Adobe House stands east of the small community of Odell in Wilbarger County, Texas, along the route of U.S. 283 near the Red River. The building was constructed in the late nineteenth century by Corwin F. Doan, who in 1878 established a trading post and store at the Red River crossing that became known as Doan's Crossing. The post served drovers moving longhorn cattle north on the Western Trail toward the railheads of Kansas, and for several years Doan's was the last stop in Texas before the long crossing into Indian Territory.
The house was built of adobe brick, an unusual material choice for north Texas where wood-frame and stone construction were more common. Adobe was practical on the open plains where milled lumber had to be hauled long distances and where the dry climate suited earthen walls. The walls were thick, the plan modest, and the building reflected vernacular construction without architect or formal design. A pitched roof and protective rendering helped the adobe survive the more humid conditions of the southern plains.
The house witnessed the closing years of the open-range cattle drives. After the trail traffic ended in the late 1880s with the spread of barbed wire and the extension of rail lines, Doan's Crossing settled into a small farming community, and the adobe house remained as a tangible reminder of its trail-town origin. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 under reference 79003023.
The building remains in private hands and is not generally open to the public. It is one of the few surviving structures along the Western Cattle Trail and the most prominent built remnant of Doan's Crossing.
Within the broader Texas adobe tradition, the house is an outlier from the heavily settled western mission belt, documenting how earthen construction reached the rolling plains of the Red River country during the late frontier era.
