Fisher Memorial Home

The Fisher Memorial Home stands in the railroad town of Casa Grande, Pinal County, Arizona, on the flat agricultural plain south of Phoenix. The house was built in the 1920s, a period in which Casa Grande's cotton, citrus, and cattle operations were drawing modest middle-class settlement to the townsite that had grown up around the Southern Pacific line. It is a representative example of small-town Arizona Pueblo Revival — the form of domestic architecture that flourished in central Arizona in the years between statehood and the Great Depression.

The principal volume is a single-story stuccoed rectangle organized around a central living block, with the rounded corners, low parapeted roofline, projecting wooden vigas, and shallow set-back porches characteristic of the style. Construction is stuccoed masonry or stucco over wood frame rather than true sun-dried adobe block, the typical compromise of the period: the visual softness of the older Sonoran tradition produced with the structural speed and economy of contemporary frame and hollow-tile building. Window and door openings are simply punched, with painted wood trim and exposed lintels in the regional manner.

The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 under reference number 85000884 in recognition of its architectural significance to the Casa Grande townsite. Local documentation associates the house with a memorial purpose tied to the Fisher family, and it has functioned in successive private residential and small-institutional capacities since its construction.

The home is presently held as a private residence and is not open to the public. Within Arizona's adobe tradition the Fisher Memorial Home illustrates the broader pattern of how the Pueblo Revival vocabulary, originally developed for larger civic and commercial buildings, was scaled down for ordinary middle-class housing in the small railroad and agricultural towns of the Salt and Gila valleys during the 1920s.
