Hawkins--Nimocks Estate-Patricio Ontiveros Adobe

The Hawkins-Nimocks Estate and Patricio Ontiveros Adobe stand at 12100 Telegraph Road in Santa Fe Springs, on land that formed part of the rancho holdings associated with the Ontiveros family in the southeastern Los Angeles basin. The earliest component of the property is the Patricio Ontiveros Adobe, a Mexican-period residence built in the early to mid-19th century by the Ontiveros family, who held interests in several ranchos in the Los Angeles and Orange County region. The estate was substantially expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the Hawkins and Nimocks families, who acquired the property and integrated the surviving adobe into a larger residential and agricultural complex.

The original adobe is a one-story vernacular structure with thick lime-plastered earth walls, a low-pitched wood-framed roof, and a sheltered verandah along the principal elevation. Construction follows the linear, room-after-room arrangement typical of Mexican-period residences in the Los Angeles basin. The later Hawkins-Nimocks improvements added frame structures, gardens, and ancillary buildings around the adobe, producing a layered property that documents the transition from Mexican-era ranching to American-era citrus and dairy agriculture in the lower San Gabriel Valley.

The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 under reference 82004982 in recognition of the survival of the original adobe and the layered architectural and agricultural history of the property. The estate has been incorporated into the Heritage Park system of the City of Santa Fe Springs, which has undertaken interpretive development of the surrounding landscape.

The Heritage Park site operates today as a public park and museum complex under the City of Santa Fe Springs, with interpretive exhibits on the Ontiveros family, the rancho period, and the later Hawkins-Nimocks era. Within California's broader adobe tradition, the property represents the surviving Mexican-period domestic architecture of the southeastern Los Angeles basin, joining the Dominguez Ranch Adobe and a small number of other rancho-era buildings in documenting the founding ranchero families of the region.
