History

The Simi Adobe-Strathearn House at 137 Strathearn Place in Simi Valley combines a surviving section of an early-nineteenth-century rancho adobe with a Victorian-era frame addition built around it in the 1890s. The site lies at the heart of the Rancho Simi, one of the earliest Mexican-period land grants in present-day Ventura County, originally granted to the Pico family in the 1790s.

The earliest portion of the building is an adobe wing constructed in the vernacular tradition of mission and rancho-era California. Walls were laid up in sun-dried earthen brick on stone footings, with low timber roof framing originally covered in fired clay tile, and a covered corridor sheltering the principal facade. The adobe served as the residence of successive rancho owners through the Mexican period and into the early American era.

In the 1890s the Strathearn family, Scottish immigrants who had acquired portions of the former rancho lands, built a substantial two-story frame house abutting and partially incorporating the surviving adobe wing. The combined structure thus presents a striking juxtaposition of mission-era adobe construction and late Victorian wood-frame architecture, documenting two distinct phases of California settlement on a single site.

The property was acquired by the City of Simi Valley and the Simi Valley Historical Society in the twentieth century and is now operated as the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum, with interpretive exhibits covering both the rancho and the Strathearn family eras. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 under reference number 78000825.

The site remains in private nonprofit and municipal stewardship as a public historical park.

Within California's adobe tradition, the Simi Adobe-Strathearn House is an unusually clear example of the layered building history of rancho-era properties, documenting the persistence of original adobe construction even as later American-era owners overbuilt it with the wood-framed vocabulary of the late nineteenth century.
