Taos Indian Health Center

The Taos Indian Health Center stands a short distance south-southwest of the central plaza of Taos Pueblo, on the tribal lands of the Tiwa-speaking community. The building was constructed to serve as a health facility on the pueblo and is associated with the federal Indian Health Service program that established clinics on reservations and pueblos across the western United States during the twentieth century.

The structure was built in the vernacular adobe tradition of the upper Rio Grande, the regional idiom that the pueblo itself has practiced for many centuries. Walls of coursed adobe set on stone footings were finished with mud and later cement plaster; the roof is low and flat, drained by canales, and carried on vigas of pine in the manner long established at Taos. Window and door openings are simple and rectangular, sized to the structural limits of the wall, and door surrounds and lintels were finished in milled lumber. The building was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey, which produced a measured record of its plan and elevations.

The facility provided primary medical and public-health services to the residents of Taos Pueblo during the period of its operation and represented the federal effort to extend basic health care to Native communities. Operations have since shifted to a newer Indian Health Service facility serving the pueblo, and the original building no longer functions as a clinic.

The property is on tribal land within the Pueblo of Taos and is subject to the governance of the pueblo. It is not generally open to the public. Within the broader adobe tradition of New Mexico, the Taos Indian Health Center represents the twentieth-century application of the local Tiwa adobe vernacular to a federal program building: a small institutional structure built in the same materials and the same methods as the surrounding domestic architecture, reflecting the pueblo's continuity of construction practice across changing uses.
