Yorba, Domingo Adobe and Casa Manuel Garcia

The Domingo Yorba Adobe and adjoining Casa Manuel Garcia at 31781 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano form a paired group of mid-nineteenth-century residences in the historic core of the mission town. The properties are associated with the Yorba family, one of the more prominent rancho dynasties of southern California, and with the Garcia family who were connected to them by marriage and business.

The buildings are constructed in the vernacular adobe tradition characteristic of the southern California pueblo and rancho residences. Walls were laid up in sun-dried adobe brick on stone footings, with timber roof framing originally covered in fired clay tile from kilns that had served the nearby mission. The plan of each structure organized rooms in a linear arrangement opening to a covered corridor along the principal facade, with whitewashed lime-plastered interiors and packed-earth or plank floors. Together the two adobes form a small ensemble that documents the residential pattern of the mission town in the late Mexican and early American periods.

The structures served as private residences through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century, weathering the catastrophic decline of the southern California cattle economy in the 1860s and the subsequent transformation of San Juan Capistrano from a mission and rancho center to an agricultural and later tourist town. The Yorba and Garcia connections to the broader history of the region place the buildings within a network of family properties that extended across Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.

The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 under reference number 82002222 in recognition of its surviving adobe fabric and its historical associations. The buildings remain in private ownership today.

Within California's adobe tradition, the Yorba and Garcia adobes are representative examples of the modest mid-nineteenth-century pueblo residences that surrounded the surviving mission churches of southern California, documenting the residential life of the mission towns through the transitions from Mexican to American rule.
