History

The Pueblo of Nambe lies in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Santa Fe and has been continuously occupied by Tewa-speaking Puebloan people for many centuries before European contact. The historic village core surrounds a central plaza, with house blocks of one and two stories built around it in the long-established northern Tewa pattern. Archaeological deposits indicate that the present settlement is part of a longer sequence of nearby ancestral villages along the Nambe and Pojoaque drainages.

Construction at Nambe follows the vernacular adobe tradition of the upper Rio Grande. Walls were built of coursed adobe or of stone set in mud and finished with mud plaster, periodically renewed by the women of each household. Vigas of pine carry flat roofs covered with latillas, brush, and packed earth, and rooms open onto the plaza or onto interior courtyards. The pueblo's church, dedicated to San Francisco de Asis, has been rebuilt several times on the site of an early colonial mission and continues to serve as a parish church for the community.

Spanish missionaries established a mission at Nambe in the early seventeenth century, and the village participated in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the community maintained its Tewa language, ceremonial calendar, and traditional governance alongside the Catholic parish life imposed by the colonial mission system. A devastating fire in the late nineteenth century destroyed portions of the original mission, and rebuilding campaigns altered but did not erase the historic plaza arrangement.

The pueblo was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 in recognition of its long occupation and architectural integrity. Today Nambe is governed by an elected tribal council, maintains its ceremonial cycle, and operates limited cultural and recreational facilities open to visitors at specified times. Within the broader adobe tradition of New Mexico, Pueblo of Nambe represents the persistence of Tewa village form, the layered adobe house block around the plaza that defines the northern Rio Grande pueblos.
