History

The Centinela Adobe stands at 7634 Midfield Avenue in the Westchester area of Los Angeles, on land that formed part of Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela, the Mexican-era grant that took its name from a freshwater spring used by vaqueros watching cattle on the surrounding plain. The adobe was built in 1834 by Ignacio Machado, a member of one of the early Californio families of the Los Angeles basin, and it served as the principal residence of the Centinela rancho through the closing years of Mexican rule. The building is the oldest known surviving structure within the modern city of Inglewood and one of the oldest in the western Los Angeles basin.

The building is a one-story vernacular adobe of rectangular plan, with thick walls of sun-dried earth bricks on a low stone footing, a wood-framed and shingled gable roof, and a sheltered verandah along the principal elevation. The interior follows the linear, room-after-room arrangement characteristic of Mexican-period rancho residences, and the construction relies entirely on hand-shaped timbers, locally quarried stone, and earth from the surrounding plain. Lime plaster applied over the adobe walls protects the building from rain and seasonal humidity off the coast.

The Centinela Adobe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 under reference 74000522 in recognition of its survival from the Mexican period and its association with the founding of the Centinela rancho. The property is maintained by the Centinela Valley Historical Society, which operates the site as a small museum with limited public hours and educational programming.

Within California's broader adobe tradition, the Centinela Adobe is part of the small group of Mexican-period houses still standing in the urbanized Los Angeles basin, joining the Avila Adobe, the Sepulveda House, the Dominguez Ranch Adobe, and a handful of others in documenting the domestic architecture of the rancheros who held the great pastoral grants of the southern coast before American statehood.
