History

Luna Lodge stands at 9019 Central Avenue NE in Albuquerque, on the east side of the city where the original alignment of U.S. Route 66 climbs out of the Rio Grande valley toward Tijeras Canyon. The motel was constructed in 1949 by the Luna family and was conceived from the outset as a Route 66 tourist court, the postwar successor to the prewar auto-court typology represented by El Vado west of the river.

The complex is a representative example of late Pueblo Revival commercial architecture along the highway. The cabins, office, and connected wings are built of conventional masonry and frame construction finished in earth-toned stucco, with stepped parapets, projecting vigas, hand-painted wooden signs, and a roadside neon pylon. The form vocabulary borrowed directly from the older adobe villages along the Rio Grande and was deployed up and down Central Avenue as part of the broader effort to give Albuquerque a regional identity legible to passing motorists. The Historic American Engineering Record documented the property under HAER NM-13.

Luna Lodge operated as a motel for more than half a century, sheltering Route 66 travelers during the highway's peak years and surviving the difficult decades after the construction of Interstate 40 pulled long-distance traffic off Central Avenue. The property was rehabilitated in the early twenty-first century and reopened as an affordable housing development that preserved the original Pueblo Revival fabric and the restored neon sign.

Luna Lodge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 under reference 98000600. The site is in active residential use and is not open to the general public, although the exterior, courtyard, and sign are visible from Central Avenue. Together with El Vado at the western end of the city, the property anchors the east end of the Albuquerque Route 66 Pueblo Revival corridor.
