History

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church stands at 7813 Edith Boulevard NE in the village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, in the historic Hispano farming strip that lines the Rio Grande north of the original Albuquerque plaza. The present church was built in 1870 to serve the agricultural community gathered along Edith and Fourth Streets, replacing or expanding an earlier visita chapel tied to the larger parish at San Felipe de Neri in Old Town.

The building is a vernacular adobe of the middle Rio Grande type with later Pueblo Revival overlays. The walls are load-bearing sun-dried mud brick laid on stone footings, several feet thick at the base and finished originally in mud plaster. The plan is a single rectangular nave with a low sanctuary and a small choir loft, roofed with peeled vigas and split-cedar latillas under packed earth and, in later years, metal. A modest bell tower or espadaña marks the entry, and the surrounding camposanto holds the graves of several generations of the founding families of the village. Twentieth-century campaigns added stuccoed parapets, deep-set wooden window openings, and Pueblo Revival detailing at the entry.

The church served the Catholic community of Los Ranchos for more than a century and stands at the historical center of the village. It is associated with the Hispano farming families whose names recur across the surviving North Valley buildings, including the nearby Juan Chavez House on Fourth Street.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 under reference 84002884. The building has been adapted for community and interpretive use and functions in part as a small parish museum, and the grounds are open to the public during posted hours. The church anchors the North Valley segment of the central New Mexico adobe corridor that runs along the Rio Grande from Bernalillo south through Los Ranchos and Old Town to Belen.
