Vigil, Donaciano, House

The Donaciano Vigil House stands at 518 Alto Street in Santa Fe, on the historic west-side neighborhood that grew up along the acequia madre and the camino leading west out of the colonial city. The house is associated with Donaciano Vigil, a prominent figure in late-Mexican-period and early-United-States-territorial New Mexico, who served in the Mexican militia, as territorial secretary under Charles Bent, and as acting governor of the territory following Bent's assassination during the Taos Revolt of 1847.

The dwelling is a vernacular adobe structure of the northern Hispano tradition. Walls of coursed adobe set on stone footings carry a flat roof of vigas, latillas, and packed earth in the original configuration, modified over time with cement and tile additions as the building was adapted across the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The plan is a linear arrangement of rooms entered from a portal or directly from the street, with the deep wall thickness, plank doors with hand-forged hardware, and corner adobe fireplaces typical of Santa Fe domestic construction of the period.

The house dates from the mid-nineteenth century, the period of Vigil's residence, and survives as one of the documented dwellings of a New Mexican of his stature from the era of the transition between Mexican and United States rule. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 in recognition of its historical association and architectural integrity.

The property is in private ownership and is not generally open to the public; it lies within the Santa Fe Historic District and is protected by the city's historic preservation ordinance. Within the broader adobe tradition of New Mexico, the Donaciano Vigil House is a working example of mid-nineteenth-century Santa Fe vernacular adobe, modest in scale and detail, important less for its architectural elaboration than for its survival as the documented residence of a figure who occupied the center of the political transition that brought New Mexico into the United States.
